Established in 1968, the Gatina washing station has become a cornerstone of the coffee community in Katarina, Nyeri County. Managed by the Mugaga Farmers Cooperative Society, it represents 790 dedicated smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on gardens averaging just one-tenth of a hectare. Alongside coffee, many farmers grow tea, maize, and legumes to sustain their livelihoods.
The Mugaga Farmers Cooperative Society oversees five washing stations, supporting a total of 4,800 members—one-third of whom are women. Together, these farmers bring their passion and care to every harvest, ensuring that the coffee processed at Gatina reflects the rich, vibrant flavors of the Nyeri region.
When you enjoy coffee from the Gatina washing station, you’re supporting a legacy of hard work, community collaboration, and a commitment to quality that has been thriving for over 50 years. Every cup connects you to the hands and hearts behind it.
